This will drain your energy (and hold you back)
‘I’m trying so hard not to be a ‘bossy’ leader – because I was always called ‘bossy’ when I was younger’.
‘I’m trying so hard not to come across as a critical parent – because my parents were critical of me, and I don’t want to be like that’.
‘I’m struggling to delegate because I’m so worried I will overload my team, and some years ago, one of my team members suffered from burnout.
Our beliefs and past experiences can impact how we show up as leaders today.
Trying hard ‘not to’ do something often means we are hypervigilant. Putting all our energies into ‘not’ being that person. But that doesn’t have great consequences. It means we’re more timid than we need to be.
Focusing on what we want and who we want to be is much more powerful and energising. (Focusing on not being something is draining.)
So how about:
So how about:
- I want to be assertive and compassionate.
- I want to be honest and transparent in my expectations – and compassionate.
- I want to show that I care greatly about my team members’ well-being. I can ask them to take on these tasks—and make sure they have the capacity to do so.
Working from those thoughts will propel you forward, not hold you back.
To your success always.
