The Competence Tax π―πΈ
| 13 March 2026
Are you paying it without realising?
The more reliable and capable you are, the more work flows your way. Problems land in your inbox because everyone knows you will fix them.
It can be quite seductive and validating to be the ‘go-to’ person.
But sometimes it quietly costs you influence.
Ask yourself these five questions.
- Do people bring problems to you before they try to solve them themselves?
- Is your diary dominated by operational meetings rather than strategic discussions?
- When something goes wrong, do you feel responsible for stepping in and fixing it?
- Do you have very little uninterrupted thinking time in your week?
- Are you known as the person who gets things done rather than the person who shapes direction?
If you answered yes to most of these, you may be paying the competence tax.
Your capability has made you indispensable to delivery.
But it may also be pulling you away from the strategic focus your role requires. (That thing you never seem to get time for.)
Maybe it’s time to re-position yourself?
