The “Yes Machine”

I used to be everyone’s ‘yes machine’.

‘Yes, I can squeeze that in.’

‘Yes, I’ll pick up the slack.’

‘Yes, I’ll go to that meeting because you asked me’ (Even though I have no idea why I’m there.)

By the end of the week, I was exhausted, resentful, and wondering why I felt…. invisible.

And I’d not achieved half of what I’d set out to do on Monday. 

So a good reminder – clichéd as it is – is that ‘NO’ is a complete sentence.

And that 5-second pause before saying ‘yes’ gives us a moment of choice. To default to ‘yes’ or to choose another option.
